The Kuba, who are a group of 19 ethnic groups, dominated by the Bushong, have over 20 different mask types considered embodiments of spirits. The three most significant types, Mwaash Amboy, Bwoom and Ngaady a Mwaash, belong to the royal family.
The Ngaady a Mwaash mask represents the sister and wife of Woot, progenitor of the Bushong, who is personified by Mwaash Amboy. Bwoom figures are the progenitor’s opponent.
