Brass anklets of this type, were worn at one time by Fang and Kota women, but they were extremely heavy and really served as currency. In Gabon as well as some parts of Zaire an open-cast technique was employed: a rough wood mold was filled with clay, which was stamped or etched with the desired design; molten brass was then poured in, and after cooling the object was finished by the artisan/smith.
