Over 600 years ago the Akan people started to make brass weights for weighing gold dust, the currency of their region in Ghana and the Cote d’ivoire. Eventually they produced the most complete three dimentional collection of any culture in history. Basically any object, everyday human figure or animal that was known to them became the subject matter of these ‘gold’ weights.
